Reports from Galle district in Sri Lanka’s Southern Province say that areas in the district see an influx of peacocks.
Peacocks are seen now in home gardens in suburban areas of Galle district. However, the birds were not common in suburban areas of the district in the past.
Environmentalists say that the peacocks have migrated to these areas due to the rapid environmental changes that are taking place in Hambantota district.
Deforestation in these areas has caused loss of habitat for the peacocks and also the developments in the wet zone have also made these areas drier than before.
Sources further say that these birds are also adjusting to new food. However, they are at the risk of extinction as well since people hunt them and their eggs.
