The Madunagala Vihare is situated a few miles away from Ambalantota,in the jungle. The journey takes about 30 minutes along the tarred road. A red dirt road leads to the temple about 12.5 kilometres away. The road winds in all directions and is joined frequently by other roads and choosing the correct road is near impossible for someone without a guide.

The various cave temples contain fine murals of historical importance, which have been created during different periods of Sri Lankan history. In some of the most recent murals, white men in Portuguese and Dutch uniforms can be seen, signifying the advent of the European colonization of Sri Lanka.The Mulkirigala caves have a mixture of religious and secular paintings and sculptureswith several reclining Buddhas, including the 15 metre long sculptures of the dying Buddha. Mulkirigala contains manybeautiful wall paintings based on Jataka stories of Wessanthra and Telepaththa.
